actually it's a bit sad. A lot of people were pretty happy about the "freeze" and the rumors about an upcoming reset. The ladder is imo in a situation where the "big guys" can do what they want, example DF, vZ and so on, pugging smurfing whatever, and where the low guilds, that start with their guild, can't get "real" rating. In the ats they get farmed by the "big fishes" and in the ladder, most get farmed from the big fishes smurfs. A reset would have been great to kick all the inactive guilds ( just in case you didn't notice, nearly half of page 1 in the ladder is dead ) and would allow it to shuffle the cards in a new way so that other guilds can grow in experience. Okay it wouldn't stop the smurfing for long but at least for a few weeks where the "highranked" guilds have to play "at home". it wouldn't solve the ladderproblems but at least it would make GvG a bit more attractive for guilds that want to start.
As i said.. a bit sad that there is not even a ladderreset in discussion...

You realise that a ladder reset will basically result in EVERYONE 'smurfing' right? Even the 'big fishes' (lol)

Initially, yes. The ladder desperately needs some cleanup at the moment though.

agreed. But there are better ways than a reset (It's just moving the problem, because it will be cluttered again in another year or a few months).
giev hibernation etc. I still think thats the best solution (guild not played for a while = hibernation. Rank = N/A, Rating is still the same. After playing again you'll get back on the active ladder). meh, but it has been said a 'few' times before as well.

It's funny; I remember, when the whole "ladder is permanent lol" update occurred, Anet said something like "The ladder will be used primarily for historical purposes now." Which means that inactive guilds are exactly what Anet wants on the ladder; it's not supposed to be an accurate description of which guilds are currently the best, but which are the best of all time.
The funny part is that it seems no one in the community wants this. At all.
This makes how many times now when Anet's philosophy has clashed with the community's?

Very disappointed to hear this, all the top ranks of the ladder currently show is who farmed ATs most, left and then reformed/smurfed another guild up the ladder. The current ladder has no indication of a guild's current ability in GvG and should be reset or drastically changed.

a reset would simply delay the problem, not solve it.
In a few months, inactive guilds will be rampant again.
The hibernation idea is by far the most obvious solution to this : guilds keep their rating but not their rank if they haven't played for a while ("a while" being whatever period of time seems the best).

I cannot say if we will go back to gather the data from the games played during the freeze, or if we'll just pick up and move on when we restart the ladder. [[Andrew Patrick]] is working on this, and yes, we do see advantages and disadvantages to either way of restarting. What we would suggest is that no one mess around in rated games -- like play silly builds or take a fall -- because those games ''may'' be logged retroactively. I don't want to start a panic -- and again, I cannot say this will or will not happen -- but please keep it in mind as you choose to play rated matches.

Looks like some people might lose rating for playing the usual joke builds in a ladder freeze.

Counting the matches on the frozen ladder would be _terrible_ given most people have taken it as screw around time. I doubt this would happen but in case there is a small chance it might let me just say...DON'T DO IT.

The ladder will be turning back on on Friday, 01/04/08 at Noon Pacific time. Until that time, rated matches will continue to not effect rating. We will be making a news post about this, but please be sure to tell your guildies, allies and friends so no one gets caught in a match that counts unprepared. We may have additional information to share closer to Friday at noon.

Gaile hinted at retroactively giving guilds credit for rating earned during the freeze. Is there any chance of this? My guild is newer, unable to AT, and last night grinded out a nice amount of GVG's, but no rating gain on them. Good practice, but we would prefer to get rating out of it, especially since they were all legitimate matches and none against these jokeway builds.

During the lock, you may have noticed a large number of guilds playing whacky and generally unsuccessful builds in GvG. Locked ladders tend to bring out all the wammos. Since a number of guilds and players likely lost quite a few matches due to this, we feel retroactively making those matches change rating would be unfair.
